Parsa’s Perspective: February 2023

February is a special time of year for many living in our community.

For the East Asian community living in Aurora and across Ontario, February marks the end of the Lunar New Year. This longstanding tradition has been observed for centuries and is celebrated by communities across Ontario and the world. This year, we welcome the Year of the Rabbit, which symbolizes peace and prosperity. The rabbit harnesses positive energy and brings hope to pursue positive changes in our day-to-day lives. This year, I had the pleasure of participating in several Lunar New Year events in our local community. It was wonderful to see so many people take part and to share their individual goals and aspirations as we welcome the new year.

February also marks the beginning of Black History Month. This year, I once again joined the annual flag-raising ceremony at the Aurora Town Hall with the Aurora Black Community Association. Shortly after, I was also invited to the Aurora Black Community Association’s opening ceremony to acknowledge the achievements of Black entrepreneurs in the local community. The ceremony highlighted the many contributions influential Black Canadians have and continue to make to further advocate for equality. The national theme for celebrating Black History Month this year is “Ours to Tell,” which focuses on sacrifice, perseverance, and commitment. The theme also encourages all of us to continue working together towards a more inclusive province where everyone is welcome.

A sense of belonging and feeling welcome is what makes our community so special. Like every other community in our province, on February 20th, Ontarians will be celebrating Family Day. I hope you take some time to spend with you loved ones by perhaps visiting some of Ontario’s unique and family-friendly attractions.

Wherever you may be, I wish you all a happy Family Day.

It is an honour to serve on your behalf, and I will continue to make sure that your voices are heard.
